Bitten

This beautiful little girl…IMG_7876edithas a not-so-beautiful habit…IMG_7817editand I need some suggestions on how to get her to stop.IMG_7978edityShe has been biting her nails for at least a year. I never have to cut them anymore. I don’t bite mine, so she developed this all on her own. I have tried talking to her about it and telling her that I won’t paint her nails until she stops biting them. She says she will stop, because all little princesses need pretty pink nails. But she can’t.

I know it’s not hurting anything, but I figure if we can help her stop now it will be easier than her being a 25 year old with super-short stubby fingernails like Britney Spears.

Since it’s a pretty common habit, I’m hoping one of you has the secret and can help me out. Camryn will be so grateful someday.

I bit my nails till I was 14 when my mom got acrylic nails for me. I wore acrylics till I was 26 and now I don't bite my nails at all.
For me its about oral fixation....I always have something in my mouth and its usually my fingers. She might have the same thing.
Chase also bites his nails which comes in handy since he freaks out when I cut his nails....toes too!

Let me know if you get any good ideas, my lil' one picks the skin around her nails and her nails. Soooo aggravating!

By the way, I did the email suggestion, but umm, I'm not sure what it means.

I used to do it when I was little and my mom used hot stuff on my fingers. they sell it at the drug store and you put it on just like nail polish. It isn't harmful but if they put their fingers in their mouths then it is very hot like hot sauce almost.

I used it on Jacob one time too because he wouldn't stop biting his fingers.

Paint some vinegar on her nails. It worked for me.

Yes, I am also for the gross stuff you put on your nails that tastes like crap. My sister used to bite her nails (now it's just her cuticles, ugh), and I'm pretty sure that helped her.

I bit my nails for quite a while and my parents hated it so much! Then one day they saw this woman with very scary ugly nails and they pointed it out to me and told me if I didn't stop biting mine that's what they would look like when I grew up. I stopped that minute and never did it again. She might be a bit young for that tactic, but it's the best I've got.

I used to bite my nails for the longest time. I just eventually quit. But I would def try out the stuff mentioned to put on them. Worth a shot!

I started biting mine right about her age and I didn't stop until I got engaged when I was 23 years old! When I showed my sister my ring she said "Ew, do you really want to show off your ring with your nails looking like that?!" I never bit them again! I tried all the tricks over the years with the bad tasting stuff and what not and none of them worked for me. I'd try them though, maybe it will work for her.

Keely was a nail biter too, but I told her the nail polish thing that you mentioned and now she rarely does it. If she has a nail that is snagging on clothes or something, she'll usually try to bite it off to fix it and that's about it. I used some of that bitter tasting nail polish stuff for a while too, but it didn't help she'd just eat it off.
