House Stuff

Here's some before and in-between house remodel pictures for your viewing pleasure. Things are coming along. The wall between the kitchen and dining area is gone and the kitchen has been completely gutted. The cabinets are in the basement currently, I'm hoping to use them somehow down there instead of throwing them out. Up next for the kitchen is some sanding, patching, more sanding, and then painting. After that, the linoleum will go in, cabinets, then the counter and finally the appliances, if we can still afford them ;-) We're also going to remove that white ceiling fan (that doesn't work anyway), and put in recessed lighting.

We took out the chandelier and attempted to put in a ceiling fan. Joe ran the electrical, and it worked for the chandelier. He switched it with the fan and the fan doesn't work now, so he's going to have to get back up and figure out what's going on.

This past Friday my mom and dad took the girls overnight so we could work late. Joe, me, and our friends Jillia and JT came over and helped us. We got a lot done, including painting the master bedroom. It was bright green before, now it's a peaceful blue.

Today, Camryn decided she wanted to paint while I was sanding. Too bad it's a shade darker than that wall and I had to go back and fix it!

The plan today was for me to sand down the mud that was in the half bath and paint. I sanded, painted three of the four walls, and noticed that there were all kinds of bubbles under the paint. I poked at one, and it started peeling. I pulled it and a huge 3 foot section of paint and drywall paper came off. Ugh. I had to scrape the whole wall, and now it's down to the barest it can be. We can either re-drywall the whole bathroom or try painting over the cardboard. Joe is going to try re-taping and putting up new beading, and we'll see how that looks. A small setback, but it could have been worse.

Here's the playroom. It was very purple before. Nothing against purple, I actually liked it. It was just VERY purple, and we were already going to have a pink room, so that was a bit much. We decided on a warm golden yellow. Joe also had to add the ceiling light fixture because there wasn't one there. Jillia and I picked it out last week, I think it matches nicely.

Here's what we had for dinner today. Again. There's a Little Caesar's right up the road and you just can't beat $5 pizzas.

Joe put up the chair rail in Summer and Camryn's room this evening. It looks PERFECT. Exactly what I envisioned.

Some people might not like the pink and green combo, but I love it. I think once their white furniture and their new bedding is in there it will all be tied together.

We spent almost $300 on paint. Yea... paint is expensive. And we're using the cheap stuff! A big chunk of it was a 5 gallon bucket for the living room, dining room, kitchen, hallway, and basement entry. I had picked out a color that I thought was neutral, fairly light but dark enough to notice, that would go well with our carpet, countertops, and furniture. We roll it onto the wall and it looks like orangy sand. Or make-up concealer. Ugh... not what I wanted. We could not afford to get another 5 gallon bucket, so Joe and my cousin Richard took a trip up to Home Depot to see if there was anything they could do to save it. There wasn't, but they suggested adding 2 gallons of white to it. It worked great! The color now is exactly what I had wanted to begin with.

We put the kids to work today.

I had to get Joe to cut in the basement entry. I am so bad at it, I get the paint all over the ceiling.

We got new front door locks, since we don't know who all had the keys to the old locks. We went with a Venetian Bronze finish. It's my new favorite!

Here's the carpet that we're getting, up against the paint. I think it's a good match.

That's all for today. Hopefully I will continue to remember to take my camera with me when we go over there, the past few times I had forgotten.

I want to apologize for not being around and not commenting on your blogs as much as I would like. I'm still reading as much as I can, though. All the painting is almost done, so I should be around more soon!

Wow, you guys are making progress quickly! I love the pink/green combo too. That's what the twins' nursery was done in. I think the small touches like new light fixtures and cabinet knobs make such a big difference. I love your carpet too. It's like a modern shag carpet. We have a runner of it on our stairs and it has held up really well.

I can't wait to see it when it's all done!
